About My Practice
Supervision
I am available for professional supervision. I have significant experience working in education as a teacher and counsellor.
I am passionate about supporting and guiding supervisees and colleagues. I encourage self reflection to explore their professional practice. This includes ethical aspects, organisational issues and professional and personal development.
I offer a safe, supportive space and work with integrity and authenticity.
Counselling
I typically work with young people and adults from all walks of life.
I believe that everyone is valuable and deserves to be listened to; that people are their own experts in their lives. I have a strong passion for counselling. I value the concepts of manaakitanga and whanaungatanga in my work as a counsellor and work in a culturally responsive and respectful way.
I work in response to a wide range of concerns including anxiety, peer relationships, stress, grief, the effects of trauma, anger management, and self-care.
Questions about Counselling
Counselling is a confidential process designed to help you address your concerns, gain better self-awareness, and to learn effective personal and interpersonal strategies.
As a counsellor getting to know each other is the first step. This can build a feeling of acceptance and safety.
I use the core conditions of the person centred approach as the basis of my practice. These are empathy – to understand the thoughts and feelings as a client experiences them; congruence – to be genuine and real; and, unconditional positive regard – a client is able to speak without fear of being criticised or judged. I use a variety of other counselling modalities depending on what is needed and wanted by the client.
The number of sessions varies and depends on many factors. We can work and discuss together the likely number of sessions and the frequency of sessions.
What you say in counselling is confidential. This means: Your information, including what is said in counselling, will not be shared without your permission.
During my professional supervision sessions I may discuss parts of our work. To maintain confidentiality we only use first names and limit the information shared.
All notes or records made are also confidential. I keep them as an account of our work, for legal purposes, and to support our work. These notes are kept secure according to the NZ Privacy Act 2020. You are able to read your session notes if requested.
If we work online, sessions are kept secure and the environment in which we hold the session maintains your confidentiality.
Exceptions to Confidentiality
To maintain the safety and security of my clients and to reduce risk, there are limits to confidentiality.
- If it appears that you are imminently going to cause serious harm to yourself, or to someone else, or if you or another are at risk of harm from others I am ethically and legally obligated to notify other professions and or agencies to support you. Whenever possible this will be discussed with you first. Health and safety is a priority.
- In the unlikely event of a court subpoena I may be required by law to reveal confidential material.
If you are not satisfied with the service I provide I invite you to discuss with me in the first place.
NZAC has an Ethics Committee and a Complaints process.
